The subject of medical cannabis is a controversial topic spanning the political, judicial, social, and moral domains. The stigma associated with this Schedule I drug is only one of many factors which complicate honest discussion of marijuana's medicinal benefits versus its potential for harm. The herbal form of the cannabis plant has several well-documented beneficial effects, including amelioration of nausea, the stimulus of hunger, and a broader analgesic effect.

14 states have passed laws legalizing marijuana for medical use. These states include Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. Many of these states require patients intending to use marijuana for medical use to register first--but what exactly required depends on the state. If you are considering talking to your doctor about using marijuana for your medical condition, then you will want to find out what is required to register in your state before your visit as medical documentation in some form is necessary in every state.

The American Medical Assn. changes its policy to promote clinical research and development of cannabis-based medicines and alternative delivery methods.

In the few places that allow storefront dispensaries, entrepreneurs are adopting nonprofit business models to cope with legal gray areas.

Members have the benefit of home delivery from some California medical marijuana collectives, though drivers risk arrest for distribution.

WASHINGTON – Pot-smoking patients or their sanctioned suppliers should not be targeted for federal prosecution in states that allow medical marijuana, prosecutors were told Monday in a new policy memo issued by the Justice Department.

Under the policy spelled out in a three-page legal memo, federal prosecutors are being told it is not a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana in strict compliance with state law.

Air travelers are not allowed to bring most liquids, along with weapons and explosives past the security checkpoint. But you can bring medical marijuana, if you're traveling out of two Bay area airports. It's not a case of security looking the other way, it's official airport policy.
